MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY

CONTEXT

Established in 1964, Macquarie University is one of the most successful universities in the world; Ranked internationally in the top 2% and in the top 10 in Australia. The campus in Macquarie Park, Sydney hosts 40,000 students and over 2,000 staff, they have recently invested $1 billion in faculties and infrastructure to build a university for the future.

Macquarie University hired a new CMO, John Chatterton, in mid-2015. John has a clear vision for the university with the aim to change how they communicate with future, current and alumni students. Universities across the globe are identifying the need for transformation and providing a cohesive experience across all communication channels, including print, media and digital.

John’s first task when joining Macquarie University was to realign the marketing function and provide strong leadership and guidance for the organisation. The team was made up of in-excess of 100 staff across 20 different marketing teams. John sought to centralise marketing, reducing inefficiencies and duplication, resulting in savings of over $5million for the Marketing Department.  John initially approached the Six Degrees team to help him source three Director level roles in his team.

SOLUTION

Six Degrees used an Executive Search methodology and process. . This included managing an extensive assessment and selection process, screening hundreds and face-to-face interviewing in excess of 30 suitable directors nationally. We targeted talent in higher education and services space with telco and finance  of particular interest due to the acquisition/retention component of the roles. Our message to the market promoted the forward thinking nature of the University and the CMO, who  is progressive, strong and commercial leader. We gained real traction in the market with no shortage of talent (from all industries) interested in pursuing this opportunity

OUTCOME

Once the three Director positions were successfully placed, John reached out to Six Degrees for further assistance in the recruitment of the following positions:

  • Web Analyst
  • Web Manager
  • 3 x Marketing Managers – individual faculties
  • Brand and Insights Manager

These additional six roles were successfully placed within a matter of weeks.

Success was due to the strong partnership between Six Degrees and Macquarie University. John opened his team to us, was always helpful with briefings and was communicative and prompt with all feedback. We were also able to offer a talent pool that was outside of the university sector and this was integral to the success of the project.
