Senior Merchandise Buyer

This role would suit an experienced Senior Buyer, who is looking to join a large Australian Retail group as they continue to grow their retail footprint. The ideal candidate would have experience managing a team of Junior Buyers and Assistants, to deliver commercial ranges across a selection of general merchandise categories. About the role

The role reports to the Merchandise Manager and has a team of 4 people reporting in. The Senior Buyer will support the achievement of the business vision to deliver the right product, price and in store/online experience to achieve profitable growth and drive positive market share in their space. You will lead the team to deliver financial KPI's of Sales, Margin, Income and Stock Turns and work with commitment to build positive, mutually beneficial relationships with external stakeholders such as Suppliers, Franchise Partners, Retail Customers and the Store network.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for monitoring and reviewing category and range performances against financial objectives; identifying new opportunities and taking corrective action where necessary
  • Creating and communicating performance information and tactical plans to the wider business
  • Responsible for managing a commercial and desirable range -in store and online, that meets sales budgets, margin targets, proposed range mix and customer expectations
  • Partner with the Planner to develop tactics in response to current trading results including managing an accurate re forecast process
  • Implement clear pricing architecture to sell volume
  • Lead the end to end critical path to ensure launch dates are met
  • Lead the category team ensuring they have the capability and capacity to deliver their KPI's, and cultivate employee engagement
  • Secure new innovative business opportunities such as New Product Development to drive incremental sales
  • Develop a network of suppliers to ensure consistent delivery and agreed expansion of core products that meet company values
  • Ensure the appropriate mix of regular newness and innovative commercial ranges are implemented

To Be Successful You Will Have:

  • Currently be operating at Senior Buying level or above with a solid Buying career to-date within a large retailer
  • Over 5-10 years national buying experience
  • Multi category, multi life-cycle product experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - being able to quickly establish effective relationships at all levels (internal and external) with gravitas and strength
  • Buying experience ideally in General merchandise or FMCG desirable, however other categories considered
  • Demonstrated understanding of retail fundamentals (Marketing, supply chain, operations and merchandise)
  • Outstanding commercial awareness, with a creative eye for product and trends
  • The proven ability to negotiate and drive performance of external as well as internal teams
  • Good time management skills with the ability to plan, organise and prioritise tasks under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Strong negotiation & influencing skills
  • Proven stakeholder management abilities - franchise experience preferred
