Six Degrees is recruiting this contract role on behalf of a QLD Government client based in Nerang, Gold Coast. In the role of Senior Communications Advisor, you will provide external engagement services for South Coast Region on external community engagement, public affairs, correspondence, media relations, issues management, and internal and external stakeholder relationship management across a major infrastructure program. You will represent the interests of the department, and its stakeholders in all forums that actively engage with members of the public.

You will be required to lead a small Communications and Engagement team and provide high level media, engagement and strategic advice to the Principal Communications Advisor, Project Directors, Communications and Governance Manager, Regional and Deputy Regional Director on a range of engagement activities, displaying high levels of communication, that are forward facing with a direct line to the communities we serve.

Accountabilities Include:
  • Implement active community engagement, community relations and correspondence program by supporting the delivery of consistent and externally facing engagement and stakeholder management to a broad range of community stakeholders across the region.
  • Lead and coach a small team of customer and stakeholder staff to produce clear, concise and consistent high-quality collateral and information.
  • Liaise with project managers and communication and correspondence officers to identify communication issues in the region and develop and implement proactive measures for issues management and external engagement activities.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the major works program and project activities and proactively identify trends and risks in engagement and communication issues that may affect the region.
  • Community engagement and stakeholder relationship management across a number of areas of the department and external stakeholders including the general community, industry, business communities and local, state and federal government agencies.
  • Develop and grow positive relationships with key external stakeholders and those related project teams to facilitate active cooperation, coordination and enhanced engagement and communication channels.
  • Provide advice to the region's officers and management on issues and risk management / resolution, external communication strategies and on improving relationships with key stakeholders throughout the community.
Desirable Requirements:
  • A degree in communications, public relations or marketing or equivalent years work experience would be highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in dealing with difficult stakeholders and critical conversations.
  • Experience in major infrastructure project environments and social media competency, will also be highly regarded.
  • IAP2 or equivalent training in community engagement and public participation.
  • Knowledge of the infrastructure planning lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading a team and driving positive team performance
