The cost of a wrong hire

Every leader knows the pressure of getting hiring decisions right. On the other side, every leader knows the wrong hire can quietly (or very loudly) drain resources and erode the culture you worked so hard to build.

This blog isn't to tell you what to do, it isn't called 'The Hidden Cost of the Wrong Hire' because really, there is nothing to hide. This is fact, and the data to back it up.

Why a wrong hire hurts more than you think

If you have experienced the consequences of the wrong hire, the ripple across the entire organisation is real and true.

The Australian Institute of Management (AIM) frequently quotes that "the financial cost can be up to 2 - 3x the annual salary for the role once lost productivity, recruitment, training, and onboarding are factored in.

As mentioned, the human cost is often greater. Harvard Business Review has found that poor hiring decisions can fuel cultural problems, with toxic culture ranking as one of the strongest predictors for turnover and lost momentum.

And let's think about the opportunity cost - six months spent onboarding the wrong person could just as easily have been invested in coaching the right hire. HR leaders, I'm sure you can advocate for this one.

LinkedIn Global Talent Trends stated the link between hiring for culture/skills and long-term business performance; 75% of recruiters say “skills-first hiring” is a central priority, as poor fit results in productivity loss and rehiring cycles.

The market it fast - investing in the wrong hire is time consuming and a financial risk - but lets not forget your competitors continuing their forward momentum whilst this is happening - gaining market share & launching new products.

Why businesses get it wrong

Hiring missteps do not come from a lack of effort but rather from a shortage of market insight, connections, and deep understanding of what 'the right fit' means. The pressure to fill vacancies quickly can lead to rushed decisions.

Common pitfalls our team have seen across the market include:

  • Rushed decisions – filling a gap quickly rather than carefully assessing long-term fit.

  • Over-reliance on checklists – overlooking transferable skills that could drive success in new ways.

  • Missing the human connection – values, motivations, and leadership style can be harder to assess, but they’re essential to long-term cohesion.

  • Narrow searches – focusing only on active candidates and missing passive talent, the high performers not looking but open to the right opportunity.

Why the right recruitment partner matters

With the right recruitment partner, (key word partner, we work with you rather than for you) these risks can be mitigated.

The difference between a conversation with a good partner vs a great one is someone who brings a curious perspective, honesty, and genuine connection to the conversation (we all know the feeling after a great conversation or connection, it feels different).

As 'human connectors' - understanding what motivates individuals, how they fit with your culture allows us to uncover hidden strengths and transferable skills is our job.

Our team of recruitment specialists have spent years building networks, understanding industries, and tracking talent as they move through their careers - seeing beyond CVs to values, motivations, and leadership styles, ensuring to look at the hire with a long term lens.

But how do you know which agency to use?

Many of our clients come to us after trying to hire themselves or working with agencies offering a cheaper service, only to discover how costly the wrong approach can be.

They often tell us they wish they had chosen differently from the start, because advising when a brief isn’t realistic, or when transferable skills might unlock a stronger long-term outcome - is one of the reasons why our clients come back again and again.

The bottom line

Whether you have been on a team who's made the wrong hire, or you've hired the wrong person and felt the repercussions, we can all agree hiring the right talent is one of the most significant investments a business can make. A wrong hire can set you back financially, strategically, and culturally.

The right hire, by contrast, creates momentum, strengthens culture, and unlocks growth beyond what you had pictured in the first place.

That’s why choosing the right recruitment partner matters. One who understands people as much as they understand the market.
