About the company
Climate Council is Australia’s own independent, evidence-based organisation on climate science, impacts and solutions. Powered by our incredible community, we advocate for solutions that rapidly drive down emissions, and shape the national conversation about the consequences of inaction.

Our vision: We can materially contribute to the global climate challenge and unlock social and economic benefits for Australians if we cut climate pollution far and fast enough this decade. It means transformation across all levels of government, industry, business and community — to protect Australian lives, our environment and create a safer future for our kids.

Our mission: To be a courageous catalyst propelling Australia towards bold, effective action to slash emissions during the 2020s and reach net zero by 2035.

About the role
Reporting to the COO, and part of the Executive Team, the Head of Development is a pivotal leadership role shaping both the Climate Council’s organisational and fundraising strategy. With a focus on major donors, trusts and foundations, you’ll lead high-value giving, manage your own portfolio, and work alongside the CEO and Board to drive strategic partnerships.

You’ll oversee the Community & Fundraising team, across digital fundraising and relationship management, ensuring programs are innovative, well governed and aligned with the Climate Council’s mission. As a member of the Finance & Risk Committee, you’ll also play a key role in fundraising governance and financial planning.

Based in Melbourne or Sydney.

Skills & Experience
  • 10+ years in senior philanthropy, fundraising or development roles, leading teams and major donor portfolios.
  • Strong networks and expertise in cultivating high-value gifts — ideally spanning trusts, foundations and corporates.
  • Experience within climate, environmental or mission-led sectors desirable, though we welcome candidates from universities, research, or similarly complex organisations.
  • Confident strategic advisor and relationship builder, able to work across executive and board-level stakeholders.
  • Values-driven, resilient, and comfortable balancing long-term strategy with hands-on donor engagement.

Culture / Why work for us
The Climate Council is a solutions-focused team who lead by example. You’ll join a culture that’s hopeful, collaborative and grounded in integrity. The team values flexibility, fosters innovation and actively supports staff wellbeing.
As an employee, you’ll be part of a bold, fast-moving organisation that’s making a real difference. You’ll work alongside passionate climate communicators, scientists and advocates, enjoy flexible work arrangements, and grow your skills in a purpose-driven role with national impact. You’ll also benefit from five ‘recharge’ days each year, a recognition reward program, and opportunities for professional learning and development.
