Last month the Six Degrees' Supply Chain and Engineering team donned their aprons to help out at FareShare. The afternoon of volunteering was part of the Six Degrees' annual Corporate Social Responsibility program.
FareShare is a not-for-profit organisation that collects quality surplus food that would otherwise be wasted, and with it, prepares meals for hungry and homeless Victorian. Once the meals are prepared, FareShare distribute them to a large number of charities at no cost, as well as redistributing some directly to agencies.
Given it is such a worthy cause, the Six Degrees team was keen to be involved.
After an overview of the amazing work that FareShare do for the community, it was straight into the kitchen! We were split into three groups; pastry, pies, and chopping. On the menu for the following day would be egg and bacon pies, vegetable tarts and a chunky veggie soup. It wasn't long before our competitive nature kicked in, and the race to line pastry tins was on, with Niky Fenwick being declared the winner on the day.
Our efforts resulted in the preparation of an impressive 720 egg and bacon pies.
All in all it was a fantastic day for a fantastic cause.
