About the Company
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE).  As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals.  These goals are: to maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it; to protect the Antarctic environment; to understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system; and to undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.  The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands.
The Assets and Infrastructure Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the Australian Antarctic Program.  This ranges from maintenance of existing assets through to developing or procuring new assets and capability.
The Assets & Infrastructure Engineering Group:
  • Assures the safety, capability and environmental compliance of the built environment at each of Australia's Antarctic and sub-Antarctic facilities
  • Provides expert engineering advice and support to AAD personnel to assist in ensuring the technical integrity of infrastructure and the safety and reliability assurance program.
  • Provides branch wide engineering support and services in the areas of strategic asset management, master planning, compliance management, technical publications and technical drawings
The Antarctic Infrastructure Maintenance and Operation Section is responsible for the management, maintenance and engineering development of the built infrastructure at Australia's Antarctic and sub-Antarctic. The section consists of an expeditioner workforce which carries out all maintenance activities and minor construction works at the stations and a management group of engineering and technical staff at the AAD's head office.

About the Role

Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager, this Technical Project Manager will be responsible for project management of the construction and upgrades of buildings and services for Australian Antarctic stations. The role will provide civil and structural design expertise and will provide input into the management of major maintenance schemes for Antarctic stations. The Project Engineer is based primarily at the head office however the role may encompass Antarctic service as required by particular project.
 

Skills & Experience

This is an exciting and integral role within the business for future growth and your experience and skill set will include the following:
  • Co-ordinate the development of detailed costing and planning information for the delivery, construction, installation and commissioning of new and significant upgrades to Antarctic infrastructure.
  • Incorporate workplace health and safety, environmental protection and energy efficiency measures into infrastructure designs.
  • Carry out conceptual and engineering design in a wide range of civil engineering fields including structural steel, geotechnical, concrete technology, road design and drainage with a focus on cold region engineering.
  • Identify and evaluate risk at all levels of engineering projects – safety, environmental and financial, and schedule and formulate and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Provide input into the development of rolling future town plans for Australia’s Antarctic stations.
  • Provide expertise into lifecycle and major maintenance planning for Antarctic and subantarctic infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain project documentation, including budgets, schedules, contracts, safety plans, quality control schemes and progress reports.
 
Skills Required
  • A degree in civil or structural engineering and eligible for membership of Engineers Australia with Chartered Professional Engineer status.
  • You MUST be an Austrailan Citizen.
  • Demonstrated experience and record of achievement in managing infrastructure projects. Experience in the remote management of projects at distant sites is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in the on-site management of multi-disciplined trades and engineering teams for engineering construction projects
  • Demonstrated experience in the conceptual engineering and design of buildings and facilities to deliver technically suitable, innovative and flexible solutions. Experience in cold region engineering design is desirable
  • Demonstrated experience in assessing the lifecycle of buildings and structures and planning major upgrades and maintenance activities.
  • Experience in using project management and design software.
