Electrical & Automation Engineer
Senior Electrical & Controls Engineer
South-East Melbourne | Permanent, full-time
Our client is a global leader in building component technology, and its Australian automation division designs, builds and supports the machinery behind the country’s timber frame and truss manufacturing plants. That includes presses, saws, jigs, material-handling equipment and fully automated production lines. The division has grown strongly on the back of revenue growth, with its own local facility for assembly, commissioning, engineering, development and training.
With the team expanding and experienced engineers moving on, this role is central to building long-term capability. You’ll join a multidisciplinary team of around a dozen controls, electrical, mechanical, software and hardware specialists, and help move automation support from reactive to proactive.
Key responsibilities
You’ll start by learning the business, its equipment and current control systems, and acting as the escalation point for customers. From there you’ll become the subject matter expert on the machinery across its functional, electrical and mechanical sides.
Day to day, you’ll program, troubleshoot and upgrade PLC and electrical control systems across presses, saws, jigs, material-handling equipment and automated production lines. You’ll attend customer sites to resolve critical breakdowns, and support installation and commissioning alongside project teams.
Looking ahead, you’ll identify, propose and lead improvements to equipment reliability and performance, and explore new technology and automation solutions that could be introduced across the product range. You’ll also develop and own the strategy for the automation portfolio.
You’ll also create and maintain technical documentation and standard work instructions, mentor and train controls and electrical engineers, and work closely with the mechanical, software and hardware teams.
What you’ll bring
You’ll join a business that’s investing in its automation capability and growing its team. The role gives you room to shape how the division supports its equipment and customers, with a clear path into ownership of the automation portfolio. A competitive salary package is on offer, including super and an annual incentive plan.

What you’ll bring
- Strong electrical experience across industrial machinery, including schematics, control panels, drives, sensors and machine safety
- PLC programming and troubleshooting experience, ideally on Rockwell/Allen-Bradley and Siemens. The business is moving to Siemens, so a willingness to learn it is enough.
- Hands-on shop-floor experience in manufacturing, machine building or system integration, and confidence getting into the code and the hardware to find the fault
- An engineering degree, or a pathway from an electrical trade into controls engineering
- Clear communication with customers and across mechanical, software and hardware teams
- A documentation and process mindset, plus the flexibility to handle shifting priorities
