About the Opportunity
An exciting contract opportunity has become available for an experienced Principal Financial Accountant to join a Financial Accounting Team within a Queensland Government agency based in Brisbane CBD. This is a 5 month contract from October 2026 to 28 February 2027 with the possibility of extension for the right candidate.
Working within a Corporate Finance function, you will be part of a high performing team responsible for statutory financial reporting, QAO audit coordination and technical accounting advice across the organisation.

About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Financial Accounting, you will lead and support a broad range of financial accounting activities including:
- Leading the preparation and delivery of high quality annual financial statements in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and Queensland Treasury Financial Reporting Requirements
- Coordinating and supporting QAO audit processes including planning, interim, hard close and EOFY
- Preparing key month end journals, reconciliations, movement schedules, lead schedules and notes disclosures
- Monitoring compliance with financial legislation and providing expert technical accounting advice to senior management on emerging standards and regulatory changes
- Preparing departmental position papers and formal responses on behalf of the organisation
- Providing training and information sessions to business groups on relevant financial accounting topics
- Supporting and coaching team members to foster continuous learning and development
- Assisting in the preparation of responses to urgent financial information requests including ministerial briefings, questions on notice and audit requests
- Collaborating with finance staff across the organisation and maintaining productive relationships with Queensland Treasury and other external stakeholders
To be successful in this role you will bring:
- Extensive experience in financial accounting, ideally within a government or large complex organisation
- A proven track record in the preparation of annual statutory financial statements ensuring completeness, accuracy and compliance with statutory requirements
- Demonstrated experience preparing movement schedules, lead schedules, reconciliations and notes disclosures to support annual financial statements
- Strong working knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and Queensland Treasury Financial Reporting Requirements
- The ability to interpret newly issued accounting guidance and translate it into practical technical advice for senior management
- Excellent written communication skills for preparing position papers, reports and correspondence
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships across finance teams and with external stakeholders
- CPA Australia, Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) or MIPA membership with the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA)
- Experience in Queensland Government financial reporting requirements and processes
