About the company
A long-established operator in the petrochemical industry, running a large, continuously operating facility of National significance in Melbourne’s western suburbs. They are planning a major upgrade of the site - it is the largest capital project the local petrochemical sector has seen in recent history, combining greenfield and brownfield works, with new process units, utilities and infrastructure integrated into a live operating environment.

About the Role
As Lead Electrical Engineer you will sit within the Owner’s Team, and be the accountable party for every electrical deliverable on the project. That accountability runs end to end, from concept selection through front-end engineering, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover to operations.
You will own the Electrical Design Basis, philosophies and specifications, and set the requirements for HV, MV and LV distribution, substations, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, VSDs, UPS and emergency power, earthing, lightning protection, hazardous area installations, lighting and heat tracing. You will review and approve the power system studies (load flow, short circuit, motor starting, protection coordination, arc flash, harmonics and earthing), assess the HV supply options and recommend the preferred solution to the project.
Much of the design will be produced by suppliers, so a large part of the role is assuring their work. This includes RFTs and bid evaluations for major electrical packages, vendor document review, factory acceptance testing and managing contractor performance. You will plan brownfield tie-ins, outages, isolations and energisation with Operations and Maintenance, provide electrical input to HAZOP, LOPA, SIMOPS and Safety in Design reviews, and support engagement with Energy Safe Victoria, including the Electrical Safety Management Scheme and Certificates of Electrical Safety. The role carries through to safe first energisation and startup, followed by the handover of complete asset data, maintenance philosophies, critical spares and training to the site’s electrical team.

About you

  • Experience at Senior Electrical Engineer level, prefereably Lead or Principal
  • Client-side experience is preferred, but consultancy / EPCM experience is also relevant
  • HV expertise is a must
  • Experience working on large projects
  • Understanding of Major Hazard Facility requirements is desirable
  • CPEng
