Project Engineer – Capital Works
Leading Australian Food Manufacturer | Melbourne’s north-west | Permanent |

The Business
Our client is a long-established Australian food manufacturer supplying retail, foodservice and commercial customers. This role is based at their Melbourne bakery site, which produces fresh and frozen bakery products on newer technology, including a fully automated production line and a semi-automated line for specialty products. The site runs 24/5, extending to 24/6 with demand. Its data collection and analysis are mature and its reliability is strong, with unplanned downtime reduced by 180 hours over the past 12 months. With the automated line now at or above capacity and a pipeline of major projects ahead, including a proposed new production line and a new robotic system, engineering capability is central to the site’s next stage of growth.

This role
Reporting to the Head of Engineering, with a dotted line to the Site Manager, you’ll take ownership of capital projects at the site. You’ll build the annual capital plan and deliver improvement, quality and maintenance upgrade projects from scoping and design through procurement, installation and commissioning. An early focus will be bottleneck analysis on the automated line, identifying where capacity can be lifted and turning those findings into well-scoped projects.

The role deliberately bridges continuous improvement and capital delivery, giving you the room to identify opportunities yourself and see them through, while playing a central part in the site’s larger upcoming projects. The position offers development paths into senior engineering, maintenance manager, line leader or site manager roles.

Requirements
  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering (Mechanical preferred, Electrical or Mechatronic considered), or relevant industrial experience
  • 5–7 years’ engineering experience, including FMCG manufacturing (essential)
  • Sound understanding of GMP and food safety standards
  • Experience across continuous improvement and capital projects, ideally including projects of $5 million+
  • Experience managing projects from scoping and design through to installation and commissioning
  • A proactive, hands-on approach and the ability to work well with production, maintenance and leadership teams
  • Bakery or similar food manufacturing experience (highly regarded)
  • Full Australian working rights (essential)
