Reporting directly to the CEO, the General Manager for Business, Economy & Activation leads a large cross functional team who are responsible for ensuring Melbourne remains a destination of choice across all customer groups – from the diverse business community and tourists, to those who work, live, study, and invest here.  This is a unique opportunity to influence and shape how Melbourne steps forward in enhancing and enriching the economy and environment for future generations.  
 
Key Responsibilities include: 
 
  • Identifying and cultivating strategic business partnerships with key stakeholders to promote, create and lead commercial opportunities and economic investment
  • Works in partnership to position Melbourne as the events capital of Australia and destination of choice for visitors
  • Lead the team responsible for paving the way for a sustainable economic recovery through the implementation of the Economic Development Strategy, a 10-year plan for economic, social and cultural recovery
  • Lead the strategic evolution of CoMs library service, ensuring that customer centricity is at the core of the well-established operation 
  • Identify opportunities for collaborative partnerships to continue to enhance service delivery and activation within our City
 
About you 
Leading a team across a range of industries, this is the perfect opportunity for a seasoned thought and people leader with exceptional business acumen who is seeking an opportunity to feel connected to their work through real tangible community outcomes.
 
You will be able to demonstrate:
  • Exemplary stakeholder engagement skills that can lead the team to winning the hearts and minds of investors and delivery on key outcomes for the community 
  • An understanding of the regulatory framework in which many functions of the Division operate ensuring compliance with those regulations and relevant legislation 
  • An understanding of the drivers of direct investment to revitalise Melbourne’s economic output to pre-pandemic levels 
  • Proven capacity to manage and cultivate productive working relationships with high profile and diverse stakeholders including State Government, public and private sector business associates, suppliers, partners, joint ventures and strategic alliances.  
  • Proven ability to formulate strategic direction and deliver operational and business outcomes  
  • Deep understanding, strong network and impressive track record of positive outcomes, impacting business, tourism, events and the arts sectors as well as attracting economic investment. 
  • Open to a variety of backgrounds including government, corporate, and/or tourism sectors, however, it is critical you have a strong commercial and economic mindset to apply to this exciting and impactful, broad leadership role 
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications, ideally with post graduate studies
