Six Degrees is parterning with a large QLD Government department in the recruitment of a Principal Financial Accountant.
• Coordination and support for QAO audits (planning, interim, hard-close and EOFY).
• Monthly financial reporting.
• Supporting the Manager, Financial Accounting in the management of the day-to-day operations of the team.
• Promoting continuous learning and development within the team.
As part of this opportunity, the successful candidate will be required to perform the following:
• Lead the preparation and delivery of high-quality financial statements in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards, Queensland Treasury’s Financial Reporting Requirements and relevant legislation.
• Ensure compliance with all statutory reporting requirements, including the preparation of annual financial statements and coordination of external audit processes.
• Provide accurate and timely financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
• Monitor compliance with financial legislation, policies, and procedures, and provide expert advice on emerging standards and regulatory changes.
• Interpret and review statutory financial requirements and newly issued accounting guidance to provide technical accounting advice to senior management. This includes seeking feedback from relevant stakeholders to prepare departmental position papers and formal responses on behalf of the Department.
• Prepare key month end journals and reconciliations in a timely and accurate manner.
• Present reports and information that is clear, concise, and based on sound interpretation, with comprehensive arguments that identify all relevant issues and ensure compliance.
• Provide training and information sessions to business groups on relevant financial accounting topics to enhance organisational understanding and compliance.
• Foster continuous learning within the team by coaching others, and seeking to develop advanced technical expertise, pursuing professional development and leadership skills.
• Assist in preparing responses to urgent requests for financial information such as questions on notice, Ministerial and management briefings, audit requests and position papers.
• Work collaboratively with finance staff across the Department to resolve issues and maintain strong working relationships.
• Support the Manager, Financial Accounting in the management of the day-to-day tasks of the Financial Accounting Team, including assisting in resolution of any financial accounting issues, via provision of comprehensive advice and solutions to be implemented and supporting other team members.
• Participate in projects or ad hoc tasks as required, contributing to the Financial Accounting Team’s broader objectives.
• Develop and maintain appropriate policies, procedures, guidelines and systems to facilitate and promote sound financial reporting across the Department.
• Maintain and develop constructive, collaborative working partnerships and relationships with internal stakeholders, departmental service delivery areas, and external stakeholders, including Queensland Treasury.
• Assist in the Development and implementation of strategic approaches and solutions to complex accounting and financial management issues to achieve organisation objectives.
• Foster a professional environment that encourages commitment, ethical behaviour, skills development and continuous improvement.
Qualification and Experience
Essential:
• Extensive experience in financial accounting is essential.
• Proven track record and experience in the preparation of Annual Statutory Financial Statements, to ensure completeness and accuracy of information and compliance with statutory requirements.
• Experience in preparation of detailed movement schedules and lead schedules, reconciliations and other notes disclosures to support the Annual Financial Statements as required.
• Good working knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and Queensland Treasury Financial Reporting Requirements and other relevant legislation changes and ability to design and develop new notes to support Annual Financial Statements.
Desirable:
• Accounting qualifications and membership of either CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA), or MIPA status with the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) are highly desirable.
• Experience in Queensland Government financial reporting requirements and processes is highly desired.
• For international qualifications, the applicant will need their qualification assessed, to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework. The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training can assist with these assessments for Queensland residents.
