An unprecedented infrastructure program for the Sunshine Coast is entering its most critical phase — and this program is building the senior leadership capacity to deliver it.

The opportunity
The Wave Stage 3 (Metro) and the Mooloolah River Interchange (MRI) upgrade are being delivered as one integrated program — Stage 3 cannot proceed without the interchange upgrade, and the two are inextricably linked. Together with Wave Stages 1 and 2, this is a fully committed public transport program connecting Birtinya to the Sunshine Coast Airport via Mountain Creek and Maroochydore, and forms part of the transport legacy for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This profile has been deliberately kept broad. Rather than recruiting against a single fixed position, the client wants to identify high-calibre leaders first and match them to the role — within the Program Management Unit, Civil Infrastructure Program, Fleet Operations and Maintenance, client-side delivery, or an Owner Participant role embedded within an Alliance — where their strongest capability and program needs align.

What you'll do
  • Provide leadership and tactical direction across a program, project, work package or enterprise function, ensuring outcomes are delivered safely and in the public interest
  • Mobilise and lead capable teams, specialist advisors, delivery partners and contractors
  • Manage complex interfaces, commercial arrangements and risk across a major, multi-stage transport program
  • Provide trusted advice and assurance to program leadership and governance forums
  • Operate with delegated authority, making timely, ethical and courageous decisions and escalating material issues with clear recommendations
  • Represent the department in governance forums, negotiations and stakeholder engagement
About you

The client is genuinely open to strong infrastructure leaders from Queensland Government, interstate or international backgrounds — sector pedigree matters more than postcode. What's essential is the ability to operate in a critical, high-scrutiny public environment: sound strategic thinking, the judgement and resilience to perform in a political environment, and a genuine understanding of — and motivation drawn from — public service values, not just private-sector delivery experience.

You'll bring:
  • Senior leadership experience across major projects or programs, with accountability for outcomes, people, risk and stakeholder confidence
  • Strong command of project, program, commercial and contract management principles
  • The ability to rapidly understand context, cut through ambiguity and convert it into practical direction
  • High-level communication and influencing skills across executive, technical, commercial, political and community audiences
  • A collaborative leadership style with clear owner accountability
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and, where the role carries professional engineering accountability, RPEQ registration (or eligibility)
