A day in the life
The primary purpose of this role is to oversee and manage football media communications regarding the AFL and AFLW competitions, football related matters (operations, umpiring, MRO, tribunal, fixturing, game analysis) and relevant business-related communications to all key stakeholders, including internal, traditional, and new media, AFL media, clubs, players, supporters. The role will also work closely with the AFL Football Operations Department.
  • Support and lead the football communications team
  • Partner with, support, influence and provide communications advice to the EGM Football Operations, GM Football, GM Competition Management and Head of Umpiring
  • Manage football related issues in a timely, effective, and efficient manner
  • Develop, leverage, and maintain strong relationships with key media outlets and senior journalists constantly driving awareness of the national competitions and decision making
  • Develop proactive communications approaches and narratives in line with football and AFL/ AFLW strategy
  • Develop, build and empower each of the football communications team’s skills, knowledge, and experience to drive high performance
  • Providing advice to clubs, state bodies and partners on football communications management issues
  • Ensure the procurement of national media coverage, peripheral media opportunities and mainstream media exposure generates positive publicity for both competitions and the AFL
Our ideal team member
  • Sound knowledge and experience of news and editorial management, including a strong understanding of media channels and news cycle
  • Ability to work in and lead/motivate a dynamic team, with a proven resilience in a high pressured, fast paced and issue rich environment.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic communication plans and an understanding of brand risks and issues management
  • Experience in managing media and broadcast relationships – digital, print, radio, social media and television broadcast
  • Track record of delivering end to end communications building audience and engagement through multiple media channels
  • Exceptional presentation and communication skills with experience in writing for a variety of audiences
  • Understanding of the football industry, along with passion for public affairs and sport
  • Effective project management skills, including managing competing deadlines
  • Demonstrated capacity to work in a complex stakeholder environment
  • Communications, journalism, PR or other relevant qualification regarded highly
